Innovative Online Oral History Sites

The following is a list of sites that are innovative in their use of digital technologies or design. Not all of the sites listed are Oral History sites but some are here to demonstrate different uses of video. If you have any additions or corrections, please make them or send to matrix@msu.edu.

The Louie B. Nunn Center for Oral History at the University of Kentucky Libraries takes an innovative approach to displaying and searching oral history media. Using an application they developed entitlted, OHMS (Oral History Metatadata Synchronizer) Synchronizer)to inexpensively and efficiently enhance access to and discovery of oral history online. The OHMS system provides users word-level search capability and a time-correlated transcript or index connecting the textual search term to the corresponding moment in the recorded interview online.

This site not only demonstrates and innovative student driven oral history projects, but the video is nicely embedded next to its contextual information. The design makes it easy to move through the parts of the interviews and avoids pop-up windows.

• USC Shoah Foundation Institute: iWitness

iWitness is an online application that gives educators and students access to search, watch, and learn from more than 1,000 video testimonies of Holocaust survivors and other witnesses. The videos are contextualized exceptionally well. While clips will pop-up with some associated metadata, the full video remain embedded in the page and are indexed by topic and people, also associated photos and documents. The search is highly flexible, returns not only objects but associated materials, and it turns search delays into teachable moments.
