Digital Audio at the National Library of Canada

Guidelines on Computer File Types

Suggested formats for creating and transferring electronic records to Library and Archives Canada.

Recommends MPEG2, because it is a de facto standard, is fairly stable within the industry, and has wide market acceptance. Additionally during interchange the MPEG2 video must be MXF compliant. Canada accepts AVI because it is also a standard, but Microsoft has announce it will drop support. MPEG4 is accepted but not recommended because it is not yet as widely accepted. Canada also accepts MOV and Real. For audio they recommend WAV or AIFF, but take mp3, MIDI, or Real
